CASI Pharmaceuticals Receives Approval From CFDA For Phase 2 Clinical Trial In China With ENMD-2076 For Soft Tissue Sarcoma

ROCKVILLE, Md., Nov. 12, 2014 - CASI Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: CASI), a biopharmaceutical company dedicated to the acquisition, development and commercialization of innovative therapeutics addressing cancer and other unmet medical needs for the global market with a primary focus on China, announces that the China Food and Drug Administration (CFDA) has approved the Company’s application to conduct a Phase 2 clinical trial in soft tissue sarcoma patients in China with its proprietary drug candidate ENMD-2076. This is the Company’s second approval to begin a Phase 2 clinical trial in an oncology indication with ENMD-2076 in the country, followed by CFDA’s approval in July to begin a Phase 2 trial in triple-negative breast cancer patients.

Ken K. Ren, Ph.D., CASI’s Chief Executive Officer, commented, “This approval to begin a Phase 2 trial with ENMD-2076 in soft tissue sarcoma advances our goal of leveraging China resources for cost-effective drug development. As an expansion of our Phase 2 trial currently ongoing in North America in soft tissue sarcoma, the data generated in China can be used to support regulatory filings in bothChina and worldwide.”

Dr. Ren continued, “We are very excited about advancing our pipeline for both China and the global market, which now includes the recently licensed commercial-stage oncology products ZEVALIN® and MARQIBO®, and the Phase 3-completed Captisol-Enabled™ melphalan. We are on track with our plan for commercialization of ZEVALIN® in Hong Kong and regulatory filings of ZEVALIN® and MARQIBO® in applicable greater China territory.”

About ENMD-2076

ENMD-2076 is an orally-active, Aurora A/angiogenic kinase inhibitor with a unique kinase selectivity profile and multiple mechanisms of action. ENMD-2076 has been shown to inhibit a distinct profile of angiogenic tyrosine kinase targets in addition to the Aurora A kinase. Aurora kinases are key regulators of mitosis (cell division), and are often over-expressed in human cancers. ENMD-2076 also targets the VEGFR, Flt-3 and FGFR3 kinases, which have been shown to play important roles in the pathology of several cancers. ENMD-2076 has shown promising activity in Phase I clinical trials in solid tumor cancers including ovarian, breast, liver, renal and sarcoma, as well as in leukemia and multiple myeloma. CASI is completing a Phase II trial of ENMD-2076 in ovarian cancer. In addition, CASI is conducting a dual-institutional Phase II study of ENMD-2076 in triple-negative breast cancer, a Phase 2 study in advanced/metastatic soft tissue sarcoma and a Phase II ovarian clear cell carcinomas. ENMD-2076 has received orphan drug designation from the U.S. FDA for the treatment of ovarian cancer, multiple myeloma, acute myeloid leukemia, and hepatocellular carcinoma.
